Sea Communities was conceptualised when an Australian non-profit marine organisation, DiVo Dive Voluntourism, was brought together by Cipto Gunawan, Indonesia’s first PADI course director and current SSI National Advisor, with the Les village elder Gede Yudarta. They worked together with the fishermen cooperative of Les Village to bring that concept to life. Sea Communities became operational with the crucial joining of a community facilitator on the ground integrating marine tourism with the village.
Today, Sea Communities is a social enterprise for the villagers of Les to earn their own way in marine tourism under the guidance of committed individuals with a mix of experience and backgrounds in NGOs, the dive industry and village community mediation.
